The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) has designated February 28 as National Science Day. National Science Day is celebrated to felicitate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for the discovery of the Raman Effect. Science Week is also celebrated along with National Science Day.

Sir C.V. Raman and Raman Effect

  • Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on 7 November 1888 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
  • On 28 February 1928, he started an experiment with K. S. Krishnan, what is now called the Raman Effects. Raman Effects are on Scattering of Light.
  • He won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for “the scattering of light and for the discovery of the Raman effect“ and became the first Asian and first non-white to receive any Nobel Prize in the sciences.

The National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) acts as a nodal agency to support, catalyze, and coordinate the celebration of the National Science Day throughout the country in scientific institutions, research laboratories, and autonomous scientific institutions associated with the Department of Science and Technology.

National Science Day: Significance

The first NSC was celebrated on February 28, 1987. Science and Technology are an important part of human life nowadays. There are lots of inventions that are ongoing in the various parts of countries. The significance of observing The Day is to spread a message about the importance of science amongst the youth and tell them how science is used in our daily lives. This is observed to develop the interest of youth in science and to display activities, efforts, and achievements in the field of science and discuss development in the field of science.
