Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat not get Silver medal CAS rejects Vinesh Phogat appeal

BLOG/ NEWS Legal News
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Paris has rejected the application submitted by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat for award of a silver medal in the 50 kilogram women’s wrestling competition at the Paris Olympics 2024.

On August 9, CAS had registered Vinesh Phogat application and referred the case to arbitrator Dr Annabelle Bennett, a former judge of the Federal Court of Australia. The hearing before Bennet concluded on the same day.

Phogat was due to compete in the final of the women’s wrestling against America’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the 50 kg category but was disqualified before the bout after failing to make weight by approximately 100 grams. The decision was made by the United World Wrestling (UWW). Following her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat filed an application challenging the UWW’s decision on August 7.

According to the press release uploaded on the CAS website on August 9, Vinesh Phogat initially sought a decision to annul the challenged decision, order a new weigh-in before the final match, and declare her eligible to participate in the final. The release stated, “The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and that she requests to be awarded a (shared) silver medal.”
