Hi, my name is Shivani Pandey student of Jamnalal Baja School of Legal Studies, BanasthaliVidyapith, Rajasthan.  3rd Year (6th Semester). I did my Internship at the Law Commission of India, Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law And Justice.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE 

The Law Commission of India provides internship to law students who are to assist the Commission in legal research or project on reformation of law. It provides internship in 3 phases i.e. Summer Internship (May-June), Winter Internship (November-December) and Mid-term Internship.

An aspirant can download the internship application form from the website of Law Commission through internship portal and can send it via post to the address of the Commission along with your resume, recommendation letter attached with it. Generally, they do not ask for any other document but if any of these documents are attached, the probability of selection tends to be high. 

The applicant has to propose a topic of research which s/he intends to work upon and write about a page introducing the proposed topic. The more exclusive and emerging topic of law is chosen the better it is. 

The last date of application should also be checked upon. I did my internship in summer for which the last date of application submission was 1st April.  

The selection is notified to us via e-mail on the registered mail address from the Ministry of Law and Justice, Govt. of India.

 

ACCOMMODATION: HOW? WHERE? 

There will be hardly any internship for law students which provide accommodation and this one also is not an exception. The interns have to make arrangements for their accommodation by themselves at their expenses. 

Paying Guest Accommodation is the best option. The PG rooms in Amar Colony near Kailash Colony Metro Station, in Lajpat Nagar and Jangpura, will make the to and fro very convenient. 

There will be no extra money spent on conveyance as LokNayakBhawan is at 400m from Khan Market Metro Station.   

FIRST DAY: FIRST IMPRESSION: FORMALITIES

On the first day of work at such a great establishment, excitement and nervousness walk along with you. Because of the security reasons the entry into the premise was not a piece of cake. Without a pass, entry was only allowed after the biometrics test of the entrant. 

When I reached there after going through all the formalities relating to the entry, my co-interns were already there. Then we were called in the office of the Law Officer for orientation, where I came to know that out of hundreds of summer internship application only 5 were selected. We were appreciated by him. Sooner he gave us a list of topics to select for the research work. 

I cannot share the topic of research and the extent of my research as it will be against the privacy policy of the Commission which indeed we were supposed to maintain. 

OFFICE AND WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT

There are almost all the crucial offices of Ministries in the multi-storey LokNayakBhawan which provides workspace to thousands of government employees, yet it maintains pin-drop silence. Even that silence tends to boast about how it facilitates the work of national importance. 

The main building is divided into three wings to manage the workforce pressure probably. Unlike most of the organizations, interns are valued and taken care of in the Commission. The analysis of research conducted by the interns is checked upon on regular intervals by the guiding law officer who asks about the progress of the report. 

We were given proper access to the library of the Commission from where I could get all the previous reports related to the concerned topic. 

All the interns were provided with their own space & computer, printer etc. for researching without any hindrance.

We were required to remain in office from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Also, there were a few tribunals in the same premise; we could easily get an opportunity to witness the proceeding of the tribunal. 

CHILL CO-INTERNS

The cool and age sake interns changed the monotonous black-white environment to cherish colourful one. Usually, we didn’t use to get much time for a chill but after the office hours, we used to go for an outing and visit the surroundings. Khan Market lies in the heart of Delhi and all the places of historical and political importance are not too apart. 

STIPEND

No stipend is paid.

BIGGEST LESSONS

Learning is not only memorizing what you have been taught but it is about being able to move comfortably to a progressive yet uncomfortable zone and develop your personality. Before this internship, I had never stayed in Delhi for more than a week. This one month was a distinguished experience in itself. As far as the research is concerned, it took a deep dig for bringing out the best of the research. This month-long experience has proved to be very fruitful to me as per me.
