Video games censorship is some initiatives taken by the respected authorities for limited access, regulating video games or specific video games, also censor some of the content due to its nature of the content for its users. The government tries to create and enact legislation that controls the distribution of video games by the content rating systems or even banning of those games by the way of censorship.
ESRB is a voluntary rating system of united states and Canada and Pan European Game Information ( PEGI ) of Europe aims to inform parents about the games that are been played by their children. Many controversial games provide information that they are not supposed to be played by young children. Such games packaging also indicates that these types of games should not be sold to children below a certain age as mentioned on it.
Role of Government
Government of almost every country has brought interactive digital video games industry under their surveillance to impose restrictions on graphic violence in some of the games. Due to these types of games, many children are found to be violent and are taking a high amount of stress for their age. As a leader in the field of technology and innovations, the United States of America started the initiative of censorship of video games and computer games. Indianapolis And St. Louis has passed the laws concerning banning of these violent games to the minors. “ The protect children from video games sex and violence act “ of 2003 imposes fines on sellers who sells or rents these types of games whose content is harmful to the children in our society.
The Blue Game challenge which resulted in multiple suicides by children, to deal with this a writ petition was been filed in the Madras High Court requesting to provide for a proper mechanism to put a check on such type of games which are harmful to children of small age. The Madras High Court issued several directions to block the access of the game and also to remove all the hidden links and hashtags in torrents related to blue whale game.
The recent controversial case is regarding the game called pubg consisting of cyberbullying, killing, looting, violence and aggression been promoted among the youth generation and needs to be banned for the betterment of the society. This case is already under the review of the government of India. These were some of the initiatives taken by the government in terms of providing censorship and restrictions in the field of video games and computer games in our society.
