POLICE, LAW AND SOCIETY: THE PARADIGM SHIFT
• Among the pillars of the criminal justice system, police is considered as one of the closest pillars of the criminal
justice administration available to common man. Whenever there is any imminent threat or danger to life and
property of the people, the doors of the police are always knocked for it is the police force who is entrusted by the
Constitution of India to maintain peace and harmony. They are the public servants and play a pivotal role in
maintaining the decorum and status quo in the society.
• Despite having responsibilities and performing them to the best of their abilities, police is always considered as a
lethargic, maligned and corrupt institution and there is always a fear in the minds of the general mass to approach
the police even at times of need. The reasons may vary according to the situations, but there is a need for huge
reform in the present scenario. Moreover, the changing façade in relation to the advance technology is definitely a
need for reforms as many officers are still attached to the age-old technology and also to the British legacy.
• The aim of the proposed book is to study the relationship between the police and the public and correlate the
notions of community-oriented policing which is the need of the hour today. The book would further enumerate
how the perception of the common people about the police need to change today and focusses on the fact that how
the advent of society has helped the institution of police and also developed better police public interface.
