INTRODUCTION
The agrarian community has been facing a discontent over past several months in various states of India. Erratic behavior in various states has shown the desperate efforts of getting attention from government. India is an agricultural country where 60% of the country population lives in rural area. Hence, neglecting the demands, deprives the living standards and economic development of nation. Waiving off loans and better price for production is the common demands of such crises. Small incentives and agrees to waive off the loans has always been a result of making of short-sighted policies.
ACTUAL REASON BEHIND THE ATROCITIES
There are some fundamental root causes which contributes to the complacency of this misfortune of agrarian crises:
-
LOANS:
- Loans or investment, to produce irrigation and agricultural equipment like machines, power, tools, etc. is the major factor.
- Farmers, does not have adequate and sufficient techniques to combat calamities like heavy raining, floods, heavy cyclones, etc.
-
GOVERNMENT POLICIES:
- Food grains like wheat and rice had procured at minimum support price (MSP) by government. But, farmers don’t have enough surplus to justify the cost of transporting the crop to the government corporations, so they usually sell their crops to nearby Mandi.
- Another service provided by government, i.e. Agricultural produce market committee (APMCs), whose main aim was to protect the rights of farmers. This had regulated the purchase prices and excessive large commissions with their oligopolistic power.
- ANOTHER SET OF FACTORS:
- Another set of factors like illiteracy and insufficient knowledge of farming silks disintegrate their decision taking skills related to farming.
- Globalization, innovation of new technologies and other cultivating techniques has not been in the reach of small and poor farmers.
- Weak soil fertility, plant diseases and pest, transportation, storage facilities and post harvest activities can also contribute to this crises.
To conclude, there has been an ongoing set of difficulties and also an emerging ones too, which brings the need of reviewing the policies and to attain sustainable goals.
LOAN WAIVER A POSSIBLE SOLUTION: TRUE OR FALSE
It is tempting enough for rejuvenating the roots of farming but cannot assure to secure credit system in the long term. Studies had shown associated causes with which needs to be reviewed for the outcome of long-term solutions in the agriculture development.
CONCLUSION
For boosting the agriculture sector and to make it sustainable enough, Infrastructure and productivity has always been two important key elements in the progress. Productivity has to be increased by various techniques like indulged or incorporated technology, education and more scientific methods. Facilities like cold chain, warehouses, transportation etc. needed to be improved and had to be accessed by farmers, on higher as well as lower level. Whereas if infrastructure to support the productivity can be improved, this would be major comeback for the long term benefit and sustainable development of economic as well as agriculture sector in our nation.
