The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Delhi High Court to decide the key issue in the Raghav Chadha defamation case by September 25. The Court has also asked the parties to appear before the High Court on Monday.
The matter was listed for hearing before the bench Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud. Senior Advocate Anand Grover represented Raghav Chadha.
The key issue in the defamation suit is “whether a re-tweet can be a basis of a defamation suit.” The suit originated when Chadha re-tweeted a tweet of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which allegedly contained defamatory remarks against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Senior Advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra argued that it was due to several adjournments that the case got delayed. Grover, denying the allegations, said that in his professional life, he has not taken a single adjournment without a valid reason.
Grover also raised his arguments saying that since no notice has been issued in the matter, the opposite side should refrain from arguing.
