Uniform Civil Code is defined under Article 44 of Directive Principles of State Policy of our Constitution of India. According to this code, the state must secure all the citizens throughout the territory of India. In layman’s language, it means one country one rule conducted by a single code. It consists of a set of rules and regulations for governing the personal matters of all the citizens of India irrespective of their religion. It also ensures the protection of fundamental and constitutional rights of the citizens of India.
It provides equal status to all the citizens of India irrespective of their religion, class, gender and caste etc. Uniform Civil Code helps in promoting Gender equality and brings both men and women together. All the citizens of India are been considered equal before the court of law. Article 44 along with Directive Principles of State Policy states that state can endeavour to provide for its citizens a common and Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India.
Relevance of Uniform Civil Code
The Uniform Civil Code aims to protect all the vulnerable sections and religious minorities in our society. It also promotes nationalistic fervour through unity in our society. It simplifies laws based on Hindu code bill and other laws. This code helps in simplifying all the complex laws for marriages, succession, adoption and inheritance for all the citizens throughout the territory of India.
Uniform Civil Code brings uniformity in all of the personal laws. It helps in promoting real secularism, provides more important rights to the women, promotes equality, also most of the nations are having this Uniform Civil Code. It has become an absolute necessity for all individuals of different religions and denominations. It helps in integrating India more than ever since independence. It helps in reducing vote bank politics tactics that are been used by most of the political parties during the elections.
It helps society in moving forward and taking India towards its goal of becoming a powerful and well-developed nation. Uniform Civil Code is one of the only ways to ensure equality in society. Article 25 and 26 of the constitution of India provides freedom of religion and uniform civil code is not opposed to secularism in India.
