Judge who convicted Ram Rahim, Jagdeep Singh given Z+ security

Jagdeep Singh

Jagdeep Singh, the Special CBI judge who sentenced Ram Rahim Singh to twenty years’ imprisonment for rape, has been granted Z+ security, India Todayreports.

Singh and his family reportedly received threatening calls from supporters of the Dera Sacha Sauda, the organisation headed by the convicted godman. Consequently, a total of 55 policemen, including 10 NSG commandos have been assigned to protect the judge.

Supporters of the Dera wreaked havoc in and around the state of Haryana following the conviction of their leader. A total of 36 people were reportedly killed in the wake of the protests, with many more injured.

Singh had sentenced Ram Rahim to 10 years rigorous imprisonment along with Rs. 15 lakh fine for rape of each of the two victims. These two sentences will run consecutively.

Thus, he will have to undergo twenty years imprisonment. Besides, he has also been awarded two years rigorous imprisonment along with fine of Rs. 10,000 (with respect to the both the victims) under Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code which prescribes punishment for criminal intimidation. This sentence, it is understood, will run concurrently with the sentence under Section 376.
