INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE-Chambers of Advocate Madhav Khurana, Delhi: Criminal Law Research and Drafting Work

Advocate Madhav Khurana

Name, College and Year of Study

Hi, my name is Harshita student of Campus Law Centre, Delhi. I did my Internship at Chambers of Advocate Madhav Khurana, Delhi.

Name of the Organisation, State and City

Chambers of Advocate Madhav Khurana, Delhi

Duration

4 weeks

Application Process

I had applied at his email address: madhav.khurana[at]gmail.com and received a revert on my application within three weeks.

First Day Formalities Initial Impressions

On the first day, I coordinated with one of his associates and was asked to report at Patiala House Court at 9:45 a.m. The cause list for the day had already been shared in the WhatsApp group of the office. The associate breifed me on the facts of the case that was listed for the day to help me understand the proceedings better. Very soon Madhav Sir also came to court.

From Patiala House, we headed to the High Court where I learnt that Sir was on the legal aid panel of the Delhi High Court.
That day Sir was to argue a parole application for his client. The application was allowed. Sir’s arguments were fantastic coupled with the fact that we had a good case. From there we headed back to the office.

Soon each of the interns (3 then) was given a proposition to research on which pertained to the matters for the coming days. There weren’t any formalities that the interns were to comply with as such.

Main Tasks

The main tasks for interns at his chambers comprise of research on various criminal law propositions. He deals mostly in White Collar Crimes coupled with a few matrimonial matters. If you work diligently the associates ask you to assist them with drafting applications, replies and even written arguments. Being in my final year, I was entrusted with drafting applications and replies in quite a few matters.

Additionally, given his experience in the field, Sir is frequently appointed as an amicus curie in criminal law matters. I had the opportunity of working extensively on the concept of malicious prosecution in India and abroad.

Good Things

The internship has the right mix of pressure and freedom for a law student. They expect you to work diligently when they take the pain of explaining everything in detail. On the other hand, they also expect you to leave on time (around 8:30 p.m.) and do not keep you stuck in the office till late hours.

Madhav Sir is a witty man and once in a while, there will be conversations where he’ll leave you tongue-tied. If anyone wishes to have an experience in criminal litigation this is one of the best places to go to.

Bad Things

I have nothing to label as a bad experience from this internship experience.
