INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE- At HMJ Geeta Mittal, New Delhi

internship experience

Name, College, Year of Study, Email ID

Hi, my name is Sunit Kumar Mondal student of Gujarat National Law University. I did a Judicial Internship under HMJ Geeta Mittal (Delhi High Court), New Delhi.

Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength

Judicial Internship under HMJ Geeta Mittal (Delhi High Court), New Delhi. We worked in pairs

Application Process

I approached directly through mutual contacts.

Duration of internship and timings

4 weeks

10 A.M to 6 P.M

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

I reported to the Personal Assistants office directly. I along with my co-intern were introduced to the other Law Researchers.

HMJ Gita Mittal went to a conference during that time, so we couldn’t meet her. We were straight away directed to attend court proceedings in the other courtrooms. And, the first impression- well nothing can beat the thrill of watching a High Court proceeding for the first time. No formalities whatsoever.

Delhi High Court infrastructure cannot be questioned, although the P.A’s cabin where we used to work isn’t particularly very large, although there is enough space to accommodate the Legal Researchers and Interns.

Main tasks

We had to attend all the proceedings starting at 10 A.M to 4 P.M. Although, if work came we had to shift to the P.A’s chamber and work on the files.

Followed by clerical tasks which included making summary (peshi) of the current cases which included Writ Petitions and Letter Patent Appeals from the Central Administrative Tribunal and other service matters.

Work environment and people

Mr. Kapil Sharma (PA to HMJ Gita Mittal) is one of the coolest and funniest mentors one can ever have.

He guided us during our initial stages of work. One can easily adapt into the environment within a few days. The team I was on was very hard working and got the job done within the stipulated time, although we did get scolded if we crossed the deadline.

As those matters we worked on were to be heard the very next day.

Best things

Quality work.

Very friendly environment.

Amazing Delhi HC canteen food.

This was my second internship only, and i did not expect anything fancy but overall a very good learning experience. Plus, in Delhi, one can never be out of places to explore.

Bad things

I used to stay with my relatives near Vasant Kunj and the nearest metro station to the High Court was Pragati Maidan. So, commuting was a big issue.

Stipend

None. Frequent lunch treats though.

Biggest Lessons

People generally tend to not take internships in the first year very seriously. But opportunities like this do not come very often. I wouldn’t have learned the basics of how a courtroom actually works, if not for this internship.

It was a good learning experience, and there are ample networking opportunities for future internships if you can look around and explore.
