ABOUT V.S. MANI CENTRE FOR AIR AND SPACE LAW, GNLU

V.S. Mani Centre for Air and Space Law (VSMCASL) was established in 2019 to engage in various ways in shaping the emerging discourse in the field of Air and Space Law. The vision of the Centre is to engage in improving the existing legal and policy framework for the facilitation and regulation of safe, secure, affordable and sustainable aviation and to contribute to the shaping of a legal foundation for the future of humanity that lies in space.

ABOUT THE GNLU AIR AND SPACE LAW CONFERENCE

Aviation continues to play an instrumental role in connecting people internationally as well domestically. From a commercial viewpoint, post-pandemic recovery has been impressive indicating enhanced confidence of the consumer in the industry. At the same time, recent mid-air incidents have seriously threatened the safety in the aviation sector necessitating prompt regulatory intervention. This is coupled by the challenges posed by increasing incidences of unruly passengers threatening the safety and security of aviation. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are increasingly being deployed strategically as well as commercially. Efforts are also underway on the part of the stakeholders to ensure that environmental footprints of aviation are brought within the stipulated limits in a time bound manner as per agreements reached at the international fora. On the domestic front, the government continues to be committed to developing India as a leading aviation hub.

Space has ceased to be the final frontier. Moon is back as the focal point for human space missions as well as the exploration of its dark side. Plans are underway (through Artemis Accords and International Lunar Research Station, ILRS) to develop it as a gateway for deep space missions. Voyager I & II (the farthest human made objects) continue to move further away from the earth and send back the data as they explore the interstellar. Commercial space operations undertaken by the private actors are increasingly becoming the norm leading to creation of space assets as well as enhanced prospects of space mining, space tourism etc. Militarisation and Weaponisation of space continue to be a matter of serious concern. India has initiated reforms by opening its space sector to private players and established IN-SPACe as an independent nodal agency.

Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the previous two Conferences, VSMCASL is pleased to present the 3rd Edition of GNLU Air and Space Law Conference to be organised on 14 – 15 September 2024. The international conference aims to provide a platform for deliberations amongst the Air and Space Law enthusiasts and thereby contribute to the emerging discourse on the challenges posed to Air and Space Law in future.
