Martyr’s Day/ Shaheed Diwas is on 30th January to mark the death anniversary of “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi and to pay homage to the victims who fought for the freedom, glory, welfare, and progress of India. Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas is also commemorated on March 23 to remember the sacrifice of three extraordinary revolutionaries of India – Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar.

Martyr’s Day/ Shaheed Diwas: 30th January

Martyr’s Day is celebrated on 30th January to mark the death anniversary of “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi. The contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to the freedom of this contribution needs no explanation. Mahatma Gandhi played a prominent role in the freedom struggle through non-violent and peaceful methods. On 30 January 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by Nathuram Godse in the Birla House during his evening prayers. 

The government of India announced January 30 as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day. The President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, and the Defense Minister of our country get together at the Rajghat to the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi and put down flowers garland at the statue of Father of the Nation’ to pay homage to his contribution to our country.

Martyr’s Day/ Shaheed Diwas: 23rd March

23rd March is also celebrated as Martyr’s Day to remember the contribution of three young and brave freedom fighters: Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar. They took different paths from Mahatma Gandhi, but the motive was the same to get Independence from British rule.

On 8th April 1929, Bhagat Singh and his companions threw bombs over the Central Legislative Assembly by chanting the slogan “Inquillab Zindabad”. They were charged with murder cases for this,  and on 23rd March 1931 they were sentenced to death.
