The Conference on International Lawyers and Human Dignity is aimed at honoring the memory of a distinguished Professor of International Law of Padova, Enrico Catellani. Albeit already retired in 1938, Professor Catellani was nevertheless indecorously banned from the Law School of Padova by reason of being Jew and finally murdered in January 1945 by the Nazi-fascists. The Conference will be divided in two parts, where the first part deals with the contribution of eminent international lawyers in the ’30 of the last century, like Lauterpacht and Kelsen, to a certain extent, were able to give a long-lasting vision, which contributed to the development of international law. Others, perhaps not so forward-looking, like Catellani, who succumbed to the atrocity of their time.
The second part of the Conference shall concern the contemporary concept of human dignity in international law. The purpose is to discuss current challenges for international lawyers with regard to pressing issues of contemporary society. Some of them are indeed classical topics of international law, such as racial, religious and gender discrimination and historical revisionism or denialism. Some others, instead, have increasingly become major hurdles and represent new challenges for international law scholars, like the failed management of migrant flows and economic discrimination.
Call for Papers:
The papers are to be written in English and must be unpublished. The papers have to address one of the following issues from an international law perspective:
1. Traditional forms of discrimination (e.g. racial, religious, gender) or new forms of
discrimination (mainly economic);
2. Historical revisionism or denialism;
3. Migrant flows.
The Organizers intend to publish a volume collecting the selected papers and comment of the discussants, and will submit the manuscript to a leading international publisher.
